Chengal (Neobalanocarpus heimii) is considered one of Southeast Asia's finest structural and outdoor hardwoods. Its exceptional EN 350 Class 1 durability rating derives from a combination of naturally occurring resins, high silica content and extreme wood density (900–1,050 kg/m³). This makes chengal the benchmark specification for marine structures, harbour piers, boardwalks and premium garden decking in exposed climates. Structural engineers also specify chengal for bridge components, industrial flooring and heavy-duty outdoor frameworks. The wood is notoriously demanding to machine — carbide tooling required — but this very density guarantees a service life measured in decades rather than years.
