Kempas (Koompassia malaccensis) is an exceptionally hard, dense tropical hardwood specified wherever resistance to surface wear, impact and compression is the primary design criterion. Its Janka hardness of approximately 11,500 N far exceeds most temperate species and rivals the highest-performing tropical hardwoods. Density ranges from 830–950 kg/m³, and its interlocked grain structure delivers high dimensional stability under loaded conditions. These properties make kempas the reference species for high-traffic commercial flooring — gymnasium floors, dance halls, aerobic studios and sports facilities where impact loads and repeated foot traffic demand a surface that will not dent, groove or delaminate over years of use.
