Meranti
One of the most common species, divided into several categories such as dark red and light red. Widely used for furniture, doors, plywood, window frames, mouldings and interior trim.
Meranti (Shorea spp.) is one of the most commercially important and widely traded SE Asian timber species, available in two principal grades: light red (density ~430–650 kg/m³) and dark red (density ~650–830 kg/m³). Its ease of workability — it cuts, planes and sands cleanly — makes it a standard specification for furniture, interior doors, window frames, plywood panels and decorative mouldings. While its EN 350 Class 3–4 durability rating limits its use in fully exposed exterior situations, meranti performs well in protected and painted applications where moisture exposure is controlled. It accepts adhesives, paints and stains readily, making it adaptable for a wide range of finishing systems.
